Racism and white privilege are addressed through critical thinking,
social analysis, and team-based discussion.
A free, downloadable “board” game that supports and encourages cross-cultural understanding and compassionate action in order to help create a more loving and just world.
Players will become more aware that racism exists in many everyday situations (interpersonal and institutional), learn why the situations are racist (stereotyping, tokenism, cultural appropriation, etc.), and acquire tools to interrupt these kinds of situations.
USAGE
Road to Racial Justice can be used in social studies, psychology, language arts, and other classes; after-school programs; Black History Month/National Hispanic Heritage Month programs; and camps.
Free CCSS-aligned game curriculum, worksheets, and PowerPoint are available.
This game is equally valuable for adult players. Possible settings for play include:
Family and/or friends at a game night
Students in middle or high school, college, or graduate school
Teachers at meetings, retreats, and trainings
Racial literacy facilitators with community organizations
Facilitators in work settings
Any adults interested in learning about racism
ZOOM OPTION
Social distancing? Road to Racial Justice can be played via Zoom, without constructing the game board, and only using the Situation cards for discussion! Here’s how:
Email each player the PDF of the Situation cards in advance to print out or have handy on a second device, or use the PowerPoint presentation to display the cards.
Determine in advance the order in which you will take turns.
If you come up with other ideas of how to play the game during this time of social distancing, please let me know!

After responding to “Situation” cards that each describe a specific incident of racism, players move markers on the game board toward the finish line.

INSTRUCTIONS
How to Download and Assemble
Step One
Go to the Request Game page and complete the form. You will receive a link via email to a website page where you can download all the game materials except for dice and sticky notes (such as Post-its) to use as game markers, which you will need to purchase if you don’t already have them.
Step Two
Once you have downloaded the 4 game panels, print each one on a separate 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of paper. Next, arrange the 4 printed game panel pieces according to the placement directions on the corner of each panel: “Upper Left,” “Upper Right,” “Lower Left,” or “Lower Right.” Tape the panels together to form the game “board.”
The Situation cards come 4 to a page with “cut” lines to guide you. See examples, below.
